You'll flip when you meet Madame Leota

Greetings Ghost Fans,

One of the many changes made in the design phase of the Haunted Mansion was the augmentation of the Seance Room. The original idea for the scene was to turn from the clock hall and see Leota directly from the front at that point and slowly move around her table, behind her chair and then up to the ballroom.

The projection for her face was to come from her spirit cabinet, something practical of most seance rooms at that time.

However, installing a projector at eye level with guests would most likely ruin the effect as it would be noticed quite easily. Also, one of the great effects of Mansion is to come into the seance with guests facing the back of the chair and hearing Leota's incantations. When coming around we see that she is not in the chair, but in the ball itself. Though the effect was updated to make her ball float, you still do not see her until 1/4th of the way into the room. Though the scene was flipped, the cabinet is still behind her in Disneyland.

Very cool!

Thanks for sharing this with us. I've always pondered the magic behind Leota. Now I know a little more about it. Thanks!

Hey, you can see the triple-bell cluster in the model in that photo, the one levitating item on the blueprints that they never used.
